Picked me up a 1947 Mexican 50 Peso today
2 Attachment(s)
Gold was around $810 this morning, and I had seen my local dealer has this Saturday afternoon. 37.5 grams of gold. It amazes me that at one time, this was currency (albeit very large currency :s9: )
So, whaddy'all buy today? |
Re: Picked me up a 1947 Mexican 50 Peso today
I'm okay with you buying those...just leave the 1921's and 1931's in ms63/64 for me! K?

I like the 50 peso coin but, I don't have one yet. Still it's nice to know I could make change for one if it ever crossed my path.:bull-buddy-icon:oops more like 3 of those coins, I keep forgetting where I stash stuff.

I love those things, if memory serves, they are .90 gold so they are tough, and at 37.5 grams of gold they are massive. Great coin to just hold.

It amazes me that an US double eagle was worth and interchangeable for $20. I've been wanting to pick one up for a while now, but they're all graded nowadays :dong: and I don't want to pay a premium for a slab of plastic. Besides, I like to hold and examine gold, I have no intention of selling gold anytime soon and basically buy for bullion value so scratching and dirtying them doesn't affect me.

Watch out for fakes. I'm told there are a lot of them out there.

Re: Picked me up a 1947 Mexican 50 Peso today
Bought my first 50 Peso recently for $15 over spot. It's the least expensive gold my local coin dealer sells. Very neat coins! :s9:
BTW, from what I've heard, the Mexican Mint has used the same dies for a while, so your 1947 is likely a restrike from between 1949 and 1972. Which isn't anything to worry about, just an FYI. http://www.silvertrading.net/gold_50peso.html. Goldminer, can you give us more information on 50 Peso fakes? I haven't heard anything about that yet, and a quick search didn't turn up anything. TIA. |
Re: Picked me up a 1947 Mexican 50 Peso today
Can anyone tell me why the 1943 with 89,000 mintage, has less "book" value than the 1921 (180,000) or the 1931 (137,000)? And is the only one with an Incused edge while the others are reeded? Thanks!

KM#481 50 Pesos gold 1921 - 1947, Edge Reeded. KM#482 50 Pesos gold 1943 only. Does not say Incused edge, but mine is. 1943 obviously has a differn KM# than all the others - Why? |
Re: Picked me up a 1947 Mexican 50 Peso today
Curious. Mine's definitely got "Independencia y Libertad" around the edge. It weighs 41.60 grams, so I believe it is not a fake. I have the 2006 Standard Catalog of World Coins. Isee what you mean about the 1943 having its own KM#

Re: Picked me up a 1947 Mexican 50 Peso today
Thanks for verifying this in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. I found this info from google when trying to learn how KM #'s are assigned.
"If you are curious as to how the number system works it's really quite simple. You start off with a country or political state and their first year of coinage and the number begins from the lowest denomination to the largest based on a coin type and new numbers are added sequentially each year a new coin type is issued." So based on the last sentence, we have to assume the 1943 is a "new coin type" to have gotten it's own KM #, but what the heck is the difference from the others? To further compound the problem, I dug out an old book I have called The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Modern Mexican Coins, 1976 edition, by William Lawrence Hanks. Under the 50 Peso gold coins he states: Edge: Lettered. He does not use KM#s and lists the 1943 right in sequence with all the other dates - so doesn't separate it out for whatever reason. (By the way, his 1976 pricing is based on $165.75 gold!) Sure confusing. So your lettered edge is probably correct. Just wondering why the 2008 North American Coins & Prices would state "reeded." This book is edited by the publisher of Numismatic News. |

I sure would like to get my hands on this one!
I just don't think I can dig deep enough to own it with the 20% premium. It will be interesting to see what it sells for? http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/218...spagenameZWDVW This one too! I bet the same person will walk away with the pair? http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/218...spagenameZWDVW |
